Quotes that have come to light today from Nemanja Vidic’s agent, Silvano Martina suggest the Manchester United captain might leave the club for free in the summer.
The Serbian defender hasn’t featured as much under David Moyes since the disastrous 4-1 defeat to Manchester City in September and the new boss has preferred the partnership of Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling recently.
The 32-year old centre-back’s contract runs out in June 2014 along with fellow defenders Patrice Evra and his long-term defensive partner Rio Ferdinand. Vidic joined the club in 2006 alongside Evra and could depart at the same time if the quotes from his agent are on the money.
“Vidic, given his contract situation, has several teams looking at him. Napoli? At the moment there has been no contact,” Martina told Italian outlet Radio Crc.
It seems Serie A champions Juventus are also eyeing a move for the defender and his time at Old Trafford is most certainly coming to an end but Martina is adamant Vidic would favour a move to the side managed by ex-Liverpool boss, Rafael Benitez.
“Thanks to the management of [President] De Laurentiis and [sporting director] Bigon, they are one of the best clubs in Europe,” said Martina.
“Vidic is a very good player and will have no trouble finding a new club. For the time being we are remaining calm,” Martina went on to say.
“However, at the moment, I would rule out an extension with Manchester United.”
David Moyes already has a tough rebuilding job on his hands in the summer and with three of the back four that won the 2007/08 Champions League set to leave, it appears United will have a new look defence for many years to come.
