Manchester United lack Defensive Depth

In the League Cup match up with lower league side, Ipswich Town, Manchester United’s defensive problems will be brought to light. Louis van Gaal is going to be forced to play at least one of his starting centre backs in the minor cup bout.

Either Daley Blind or Chris Smalling or both, will have to start against Ipswich meaning that they could be missing out on some potentially crucial rest time for the core pair.

Paddy McNair looked likely to start alongside either Smalling or Blind but, aside from dipping into the U21’s, he seemed to be the viable cover for either of the starting pair but, he’s been ruled out with an injury.

Phil Jones has recovered from his minor thrombosis but van Gaal says that he’s not yet ready for first team football. It’ll take a few weeks for the Englishman to return to full fitness but with the defence lacking members, he may have to come back early.

Manchester United start their League Cup campaign at home to Ipswich Town, tomorrow at 20:00.

Enjoy that? Give it a share!
