UEFA defend referee Cuneyt Cakir over Luis Nani sending off

UEFA defend referee Cuneyt Cakir

UEFA governing board has defended referee Cuneyt Cakir after heavy criticism for sending off Luis Nani during Manchester United’s Champions League 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

European football’s governing body said it had “no problem” with Cakir & that he will remain on their list of referee’s for the next round of the competition.

A UEFA spokesman said:

“There are no issues for us regarding the sending off, and we will wait for the official reports of the match delegate and the referee’s observer, as is procedure.

“If they raise concerns, then we will act – but he remains on our list of officials.”

Nani was shown a straight red card in the 56th-minute for a high challenge on Real Madrid’s Alvaro Arbeloa, a decision which changed the tie in a game which Madrid won 2-1 and advancing into the next round.
